Buying a Puppy
So, you have decided you would like to get
your own Yorkie! You start checking all of the
newspaper ads and putting out the word
everwhere. Someone has posted an ad and you
make your appointment and go check out this
puppy. But when you get there and look at the
puppies, they all look the same; black with tan
eyebrows. Whoever heard of a Yorkie that looked
like that! Well, we have seen a lot of puppies
in the last 7 years and believe me, that is
what Yorkies look like at birth and for the
first few weeks. And, they do not really change
much in appearance for about 4 to
6 weeks. So what am I supposed to be
looking for?
Unless you would rather buy a mature dog,
you are going to have to find a breeder, check
out the breeders knowledge and attitude toward
raising Yorkies, and ask to see the parents of
the puppies for sale. A reputable breeder will
take time to answer your questions and display
an attitude that he or she really cares to whom
the puppies go to live with. At Big Thicket

puppy buyer as we look for a good home for
every one of our puppies. It is in our best
interest that these puppies get good care.
Another item to look for is a written reciept
and written garantee of the health of the puppy
giving you a defined length of time to take
your puppy to your own veterinarian. Since you
are buying a very valuable dog, you will want
to get the assurance from the breeder that your
puppy is purebred and registered. Sometimes,
the breeder will already have the registration
papers for you at time of purchase. If not,
make certain you have written into your
contract when to expect the registration
papers. Care should be taken in selection
of your puppy where future breeding is
concerned as females should weigh at
least 5 pounds in our opinion at maturity
to be considered for breeding. And, one should
always use a smaller male for additional
safety.
