House Training
Now that you have picked your puppy and taken him or her
home, the fun begins! What happens in the near future will
determine whether you have successfully trained your Yorkie or
whether, he has managed to train you! If you do not have a
plan, rest assured he will. The main thing to decide is whether
you intend to maintain a place for him or her to relieve
themself or if you want to take the dog outside. Once this
decision is made, the procedure will follow.
If you will take the dog outside: Take the dog out the very
first thing you do in the morning. as soon as he wakes and/or
is out of his crate (if used). Also, take him out after each
meal, after naps, right before bedtime, and anytime he sniffs,
circles, whines or otherwise appears distressed. As you get to
know each other, it will be easier to read signs of needs. If
you will be providing a place for your pet's "bathroom" needs,
the use of the puppy pads on the market work well. Even better,
are the people pads made to put on beds to treat urinary
incontinence. They are sometimes cheaper and larger in size.
Anyway, make a place for your puppy to go and show him where it
is. If you see him going in the wrong place, tell him "NO" in a
firm manner and place him on the pad. Keep the pads changed as
needed and encourage him when he "hits the spot" Remember to
use positive encouragement, and not negative. Never punish your
puppy for diarrhea; it's not his fault and incidentally
potentially very dangerous for him. Never punish him for
"submissive urination". This is a sign of a lack of confidence
and should be treated with gentleness. Just remember to be
patient and give him time to learn.
